4 Areas Where Data Really Matters!

For, at least, the last year, we witnessed, nearly, every day, an ongoing battle, between, those, who, embraced science, and data, versus, those, who denied the numbers, and what, the related science, indicated, regarding this horrific pandemic! The reality is, the realities of the numbers, don’t go – away, and/ or, change, by denying, and/ or ignoring them! Although, this situation, seems to be a glaring one, there are many areas/ scenarios, in our lives, where, wise leaders study, understand, and embrace, relevant statistics/ data, and lesser ones, ignore, deny, or, fail to realize, what they mean, and their significance. With that in mind, this article will attempt to, briefly, consider, examine, review, and discuss, 4 specific area, where effectively using these numbers, and truly, understanding them, matters, and why, we need to emphasize this, with our public, and elected officials.

1. Pandemic: Perhaps, the most glaring example of this, is the relationship, and necessities/ relevance, during this pandemic. To bend – the – curve, and reducing the infection rate, it’s important to effectively, consistently, take advantage of testing, and tracking, to analyze the severity, and be guided by, the positivity rate. When this rate is high, although President Trump, often, stated, was only high, because, we tested, so much, the reality is, the only way, we can, proactively, make any difference, for the better, and proceed, in a well – informed, prepared way! What sense does it make, to ignore, or deny, the statistics, regarding the enormous number of cases, deaths, and hospitalizations? Obviously, all cases are not, equal, in their danger, and, those, which, end – up, in hospital visits, especially, when there is a need, for an Intensive Care Unit, are most, at – risk! Analyzing these numbers, creates, the possibility, of more effectively, using the most appropriate, public health measures!

2. Employment/ unemployment: We must be careful, to pay more attention to the raw data, than the interpretations! For example, the official, Unemployment rate figures, is, almost always, far lower than the actual number of people, because, the government numbers, ignore those, who no longer, collect, Unemployment Insurance, and/ or, those, who find lesser jobs, either, in terms of salaries, securities, or level! When, we hear some, speak of the high, employment rate, it is important, to also, review, income growth, etc

3. Salaries, and categories: When, we analyze salaries, it is important, to compare them, to the inflation rate, etc. In addition, true leaders realize, there is, still, a significant degree of difference, in terms, of: sexual/ gender gap; age – related; racial/ ethnic, etc. How can they, realistically, address these salary gaps?

4. CPI/ Consumer Price Index: Have you ever, though, the true inflation rate, seems, considerably different from tbe actual, Consumer Price Index (CPI)? These numbers, include and exclude certain categories/ areas, of expenses, which, may be different, from what we feel!

Data has its restrictions, and, only becomes meaningful, when/ if, officials understand what it means, and what it doesn’t! Doesn’t it make sense, the public benefits, from well – prepared, knowledgable leaders?
